Day 2: Met a Director I Just Fell in Love With and Became a Satanist?
Today was drastically better than yesterday! Caroline and I planned to leave around 7:30 am to see The Dead Don't Die, but it was raining so we instead cleaned up our room and made our final battle plans for the festival, it was a much more laidback start to the day, but of course we ended up rushing anyways. We left around 9:30 am with Kristin and Gillian. Then we saw the next film on our list: Bull. This was the first film I saw at the festival and I really, really enjoyed it. Whether it was the giddiness of seeing my first one or the southern slice of life genre (right up my alley), something about this film just struck a chord with me and I ended up tearing up/crying multiple times. I will most likely be writing my review on this that will be posted this Sunday so stay tuned for more details.
Then we saw Praise Satan?, which was a very nice palette cleanser after the emotional gutting I had just received from Bull. This was about how the Temple of Satan in the U.S. (yes I know, I'm going to try to see fewer American movies) is used more of like a political tool against the evangelical right's influence on our government. Very funny, interesting, and powerful. Genuinely, I think I'm going to seek out the Atlanta chapter when I get home. Being a satanist would just complete my raging liberal/feminist/queer identity to be honest.
After this we got five euro sandwiches at the stands by the pavilions and here is when Annie Silverstein (the director of Bull) along with some of the lead actors just happened to stroll past us. After some initial hesitation, I finally went up to her and gushed about how much I loved her film and they were all so nice, honestly this was the highlight of my day. She's doing a talk at the American Pavillion on Friday along with other American directors (like Robert Eggers!!!) and I am determined to go.
After this we all (original four mentioned in first paragraph) took a quick trip back to Juan-les-Pins to change for going out, but the strap on my dress broke and I'm still exhausted so I took it as a sign to stay in tonight. So I have yet to check out the bar scene, but will try my best tomorrow. However we did all still go to the American Pavillion's welcome party from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and I got to talk to a variety of industry folk ranging from a composer to an actress to a producer to a screenwriter to an insurance provider. I'm very happy I brought my business cards and it was a scary but fun and useful experience.
Finally I left the party around 8:30 pm with Caleb, Kira, Eli, and Tucker to go see Deerskin at 10:00 pm, which felt like an absurdist, hilarious, and violent dream that I quite enjoyed. I ubered back with Emma and Casey and now I'm sitting on my bed, exhausted but very happy and hopeful for all that's to come.
