Day 12: The Last Day--Hitting a Wall of Fatigue and Festival Reflections

Today was the last day of the festival and it was a very nice day although I was incredibly tired. Caroline and I woke up pretty early considering we went out last night. We tried to make it to Sorry We Missed You at 8:30 am this morning and just couldn't do it. Instead we ate bread and cookie butter and caught the train at 9:57 am and saw Wild Goose Lake at 11:00 am, where we didn't even have to wait in line, although people were already waiting for Parasite at 1:00 pm, very glad I got to see this already.

Wild Goose Lake was pretty good, narratively weak and honestly I didn't grasp fully what was going on, but visually this was a stunning film  (which I've heard the director has even said he only really cares about how it looks). For the cinematography and mise-en-scene alone I'm glad I went to see this. Also Caroline fell asleep and woke up right when the bathing beauty gave the blowjob on the lifeboat and her confusion killed me, it was so funny.

After this Caroline and I went to the AmPav for the last time, which was bittersweet. We got some iced coffee and I got the overpriced veggie sandwich and salad like I did on the first day of the festival, a very full circle moment. We talked with Kyle, Anita, Rachel, and Chris for a while and then we went to go wait for Portrait of a Lady on Fire. We waited for like 2ish hours in line with Rachel, Katie H., and Gillian.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire was very good, I loved the slow burn and that actress is just so good her name's Adèle Haenel, I finally looked her up after seeing her in three movies (this and Heroes Don't Die and Deerskin) here. I loved the slow burn romance and obviously how gay it was, but I had some of this film spoiled for me and I was incredibly tired so I felt like I couldn't fully enjoy it, which kinda sucked.

After this me and the everyone else went back to JLP and by this point I was so tired I had a moment waiting for the train where I wasn't sure if I could make it. I also didn't bring my water bottle today so I got very dehydrated. It wasn't that bad but needless to say I was so excited to get back to the apartment and go on Instagram and nap. We actually planned to go out in Cannes tonight but I couldn't get out of bed and instead just went to the pier for a little bit with Kristin G., Gillian, Caleb, Eric, and Tucker. Me and Kristin and Gillian also got food and talked for a while on their porch.

This blog post somehow got really long but I'm just going to say a few last things. First here are my top five moments from the festival:

1. Crying and being emotionally overflowed by Bull and then immediately meeting this director Annie Silverstein right after.
2. Going to the emerging LGBT filmmakers showcase and making some really good connections and also getting to see some really good shorts.
3. Somehow finessing our way into the Director's Fortnight wrap party on the beach.
4. Saying thank you and waving to Luca Guadagnino as he walked past and him smiling.
5. Being the literal last three people to see Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse and getting to see Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe, and Eggers (for the second time!!) speak on the film.

Here are my top five films:

1. Bull
2. Parasite
3. Atlantics
4. The Lighthouse
5. Heroes Don't Die tied with And Then We Danced

And now I'm just sitting here listening to Faye Webster's new album, tired but content, and overall floored by this whole experience. Thank you for reading.
