Day 6: LGBT Showcase and Lost at Sea Through Film

Today Caroline and I planned on waking up at 6:00 am to try and see the 8:30 am screening of The Lighthouse but the alarm didn't go off and then we ended up sleeping in more. So the first thing we did was go to a 12:00 pm screening of Atlantics which was probably one of my favorite films I've seen thus far along with Bull and Heroes Don't Die. I thought it was the perfect mix of mysticism and romance and social commentary plus I absolutely love how central the ocean was to this narrative.

After this Caroline, Caleb, Kristin Guy, Gillian, Eric, and I grabbed lunch at this really nice and cheap breakfast place by the bus station (great omelet). Then Caroline and I headed to the AmPav and I got in line for the LBGT Emerging Filmmakers showcase at 4:30 pm. I got to talk to a screenwriter we had a met earlier in the festival and her wife while I waited which was really nice and then I watched eight short films and a Q&A with the filmmakers afterwards. It was an incredibly empowering experience, I got to talk to some of the directors and producers afterwards and even met someone who helps find LBGT films for festivals which is an awesome contact because I'm planning on making an LGBT short film next semester. Overall really amazing experience, although I wish there had been more representation in some of these films.

After that Caroline and I went to go meet Evan who was holding us a spot in line for the 8:30 pm showing of Robert Egger's The Lighthouse, which if you saw my review of The Witch, you know how  incredibly excited I was to see this next film of his. We were literally the last three people to get into the theater and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Plus it had mermaids, which I have literally been obsessed with forever (The Little Mermaid was my favorite Disney princess movie by far, we rewatched that VHS so many times, the beginning was always fuzzy because the tape wore thin.) So this definitely solidified the feeling of the sea's magic and terror running like a current throughout this day. I don't know if that last sentence was poetic or not I am incredibly tired but overall a very successful day. I can't believe that there are only six more days of the festival everything really has flown by so fast. Trying to make the most of it!
